PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The entire student body and staff are gearing up for the holidays. Thanks to the parent “elves”, the school is beautifully decorated to help put us all in the Christmas spirit. Thank-you to Father F. Kirouac, Ms. Percival and the Pastoral Students for preparing the Advent Liturgy. The bulletin boards are decorated by the grade levels, the Angel Tree stands proudly in the Plaza, food and gifts are piling up and we are all looking forward to the December 16th Assembly.
Discovery Day at McGill
Discovery Day at McGill was attended by 42 of QAA’s budding scientists. They attended workshops, listened to outstanding speakers and participated in a panel discussion, all on topics related to the health sciences. Thank you to Ms. Pamboukian for facilitating this program.
GMAA Hockey All-Stars game
Four of QAA’s senior girls took part in the GMAA Hockey All-Stars game at College Notre Dame on Dec. 14th. Thank you to Ms. Craigmyle for making the arrangements and to Mr. Moore for helping with transportation.
the play “When the Grinch Stole Christmas Again”
Ms. Sweer’s secondary IV drama students presented the play “When the Grinch Stole Christmas Again” to a delighted audience of preschoolers. They thought of every detail right down to the printed program that included Christmas colouring pages for the children. Well done!
QAA music students and Choir performed at the Loblaws
Much to everyone’s enjoyment, QAA music students and members of the Choir performed December 10th at the Loblaws in Kirkland to help raise funds for the President’s Choice Children’s Fund. Please keep Wednesday evening open for the Christmas Concert at 7 p.m. December 14, 2011. This is an event that show cases the talents of our students and puts everyone in the Holiday Spirit! If you miss this concert, be sure to attend the one on February 1st.
December exam period
The December exam period is around the corner. Please review the exam schedules and directives that can be found on our website. Should there be a school closure during the exam period, a public announcement will be made on the radio and a notice will appear in the QAA Alert box on our website. All exams scheduled on that day will be written on December 23rd at the originally scheduled times. Please be reminded that students are not required to be present in school unless they have an exam.

Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy holiday and New Year.

Music Department:

On Saturday, December 10th, from 1-3 pm, the QAA music department could be heard spreading Christmas joy throughout the Loblaw’s supermarket in Kirkland. Twenty-six band students along with the QAA choir spent the afternoon performing Christmas carols for the shoppers in an effort to raise money for the President’s Choice Children’s Foundation, an organization that supports local West Island families in need. We raised over $400 for this charity, and received numerous compliments from both customers and store workers who claimed that the lively music helped lift their spirits at this hectic time of year. It was a lot of fun and we plan to make this an annual event.

Physical Education Department:

This year QAA sent four teams to the 10th anniversary celebration of Splash and Dash; you may remember reading about this in our Daily Announcements. The event took place on Sat. Nov. 19th at the McGill University Sports Complex. We raised over $600 for the Sarah Cook Fund, which goes to support the Cedars Cancer Institute for Children. I helped to promote, to recruit and to organize the student teams for this event. A special thank you to Allyson Anderson, mother of Pamela Bunys (sec. 5) for bringing the idea to me and for cheering on our teams (she is one of the School Team Volunteer Coordinators at Splash and Dash).

QAA Alumnae – What’s Up!

Days fly by too quickly and sometimes we forget to keep in touch.  So many of our Alums are doing fantastic things and we would like to share the news with all of QAA. We would like to have entries every month, so we are asking that you contact us before the first of every month (January 1st, February 1st, etc.). If you are interested in sharing any Alumnae news with us, please contact Ms. Margaret Buzas at buzas.m@qaa.qc.ca

Facebook Connect and Zynga social games, such as “Empires and Allies”
My reference here is to two teenagers (under 13) who have been avid Facebook users - with parent permission. These two friends of my family have become very involved with this popular online game, where it is possible to buy virtual currency. Both parents used their credit cards to buy $10 worth for each teen; however, unknown to the parents, the teens then "bought" more virtual currency, not realising that they were accessing the credit card number again. Both teens incurred large bills, playing with each other here. Once the credit card bills arrived parents contacted Facebook/ Zynga and demanded a rebate. There was much resistance at first; then because the teen was under 13, a rebate was received. But, in the end both teens lost their Facebook account - at least until they reach 13 years of age. http://company.zynga.com/about/privacy-center/privacy-policy#security-information - (Last updated on September 30, 2011)
